An air release liner on vinyl products is a specially designed backing material that facilitates the application of vinyl to various surfaces. When vinyl is applied to a surface, trapped air can create unsightly bubbles and uneven adhesion. Air release liners are designed to combat this issue and facilitate easier and faster vinyl application. This blog looks at the key aspects and advantages of air release liners.

How do air release liners work?

Air release liners have a series of micro-channels in the liner surface. When the adhesive is coated onto the release liner, the pattern of the micro-channels on the surface of the liner is transferred to the adhesive. The key benefit of these micro-channels in the adhesive is that they provide a pathway for air to flow freely and escape from beneath the vinyl as pressure is applied during application. As demonstrated in the below graphic, this minimises the possibility of air bubbles becoming trapped between the vinyl and the surface it is being applied to. It is for this reason that air release liners are sometimes known as air flow or air egress liners.

The benefits of air release liners

Simplified application on large areas and complex surfaces

Take, for example, the process of applying a large panel of fluorescent vinyl to the back of a utility or highway maintenance vehicle for the purposes of Chapter 8 rear chevrons. When applying a large section of vinyl, the likelihood of an air bubble becoming trapped is high, however the air channels in the adhesive, created by the air release liner, enable the installer to quickly and easily remove any air that becomes trapped. This results in seamless application, even on challenging areas.

Increased realignment of materials

Vinyl applications require precision to ensure proper alignment for optimal aesthetic appeal. An air release liner creates less initial grab which means that the material can more easily be lifted and repositioned than the same product without an air release liner, until pressure is applied. This streamlines the application process and minimises the risk of stretching or damaging the material.

Reduced risk of delamination

In addition to improving aesthetics, air release liners result in a reduced risk of adhesion failures such as material delamination. Over time, air bubbles trapped between the vinyl and the surface can sometimes expand, this leads to adhesion failure or delamination. By promoting a stronger bond between the vinyl and the surface, i.e. one without air bubbles, air release liners reduce the risk of peeling, lifting, and other adhesion issues. This ensures that the vinyl maintains its integrity and appearance, even in demanding environments.

Professional finish

Achieving a flawless, smooth, and uniform surface is essential in vinyl applications, especially for vehicle wraps, signage, and large decals. Air release liners ensure that the finished product has a clean, bubble-free appearance, enhancing its visual appeal and providing a more polished, professional result.

Considerations for use

  • Surface preparation: While air release liners simplify installation, proper cleaning and preparation of the surface remain essential for optimal adhesion and longevity.
  • Pressure application: Applying consistent pressure during installation helps activate the adhesive and ensures the air channels function as intended.
  • Temperature sensitivity: Some vinyl products perform best within specific temperature ranges, so it’s important to follow manufacturer guidelines during application.
