Established in 1998, the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust is one of the largest trusts in the UK providing emergency and urgent care services to the people of Wales.

Dedicated to delivering excellent patient care to three million people across Wales, the Welsh Ambulance Service takes pride in putting quality at the heart of everything they do. Lakeside Group, who share the same passion for delivering quality, worked with the Welsh Ambulance Service to supply them with striking reflective material that they could rely on in critical times and for many years to come. The Welsh Ambulance Service chose Avery Dennison® VisiFlex™ V-8000 reflective prismatic vinyl because of its durability and flexibility.

The vehicle fleet team wanted to assure that their vehicles remained striking from the moment they left the workshop until they returned for decommissioning. Keeping the vehicles in excellent condition for an improved patient experience was important to the NHS team, so they needed a material that could withstand tough conditions and regular cleaning.

THE CHALLENGE

The Welsh Ambulance Service found that their previous reflective material was susceptible to bruising and would become black around the edges with dirt. Cleaning of the emergency vehicles would take place in the workshop, but the reflective material would often lift because of power washing, therefore increasing its vulnerability to damage. Reflective material prone to this kind of damage quickly looks tatty and in worse case scenarios can lose reflectivity.
According to the Welsh Ambulance Service,  staff are proud of the WAST brand and take pride in what they do, and so they want the emergency vehicles to be a good representation of the service they deliver. The Trust wanted to fit their vehicles with reflective material built to last, withstanding hostile environments yet still provide high-impact visibility day and night.

THE SOLUTION

Keen to try a reflective material customised for vehicles, the Welsh Ambulance Service initially trialled the Avery Dennison® VisiFlex™ V-8000 supplied by Lakeside Group. The Trust quickly found that the prismatic reflective vinyl provides striking reflectivity day and night to their fleet of 278 emergency vehicles. The single-layer construction of the VisiFlex™ V-8000 means that it’s not vulnerable to bruising, dirt or water ingress, so it will still have high performing reflective coverage and look impressive throughout the life cycle of the vehicle.

More and more vehicles at the Welsh Ambulance Service are being fitted in the flexible Avery Dennison® VisiFlex™ V-8000,  chosen because the material is tough enough for any emergency. Feedback from the workshop managers continues to be positive and there has been a significant reduction in vehicle complaints, so the vehicles are on hand for the next emergency.

Vehicle converters are also advocating the specialist vehicle material because of its ease of use, it’s less labour intensive and more time-efficient. Specifically, converters find there is less need for cuts and lines so they can gain better coverage of the vehicle, consequently the result is more seamless and less “jigsaw” looking.

Dave Holmes, National Fleet Manager at the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust said: “VisiFlex™ V-8000 looks great on any base colour vehicle both day and night.”
